LANSING, Mich. — Michigan residents are facing a combination of hazardous air quality and extreme heat as Canadian wildfire smoke continues to blanket the state.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued an air quality alert for the entire state, warning that pollutants could reach levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions. A heat advisory also remains in effect, creating potentially dangerous outdoor conditions across Mid-Michigan.
Mason Recall Effort Advances
A recall effort targeting Mason City Council member Elaine Ferris will appear on the November ballot after the Ingham County Clerk approved petition signatures submitted by organizers.
The recall stems from controversy surrounding efforts to establish a zoning ordinance for potential data center development within the city. The approval comes just days after the county clerk rejected a separate recall petition aimed at Mason Mayor Russell Whipple.
U-M Health Seeks Approval for Sparrow Clinton Expansion
The University of Michigan Health system is requesting approval from the University of Michigan Board of Regents for a major expansion and renovation project at the Sparrow Clinton campus.
According to board documents, the proposal includes construction of approximately 19,000 square feet of new hospital space, renovation of 42,000 square feet of existing hospital and medical office facilities, and the addition of a 22,000-square-foot ambulatory care center.
If approved, the estimated $62 million project would be completed over approximately 37 months.
Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests
Michigan State Police arrested two Grand Rapids residents following a traffic stop Tuesday morning on westbound Interstate 96 near Wright Road in Clinton County.
Troopers say they seized more than 100 grams of crack cocaine during the stop. Both suspects have been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Cyclospora Outbreak Continues to Grow
Michigan's Cyclospora outbreak has now exceeded 3,300 confirmed cases after more than 600 additional illnesses were reported Tuesday.
State health officials continue investigating the source of the outbreak. Preliminary findings suggest contaminated lettuce or salad greens may be responsible, although the investigation remains ongoing.
New Poll Shows Stevens Leading Senate Primary
A new poll of likely Democratic voters shows U.S. Representative Haley Stevens holding a lead in Michigan's Democratic U.S. Senate primary race.
The survey, conducted by the Glengariff Group for The Detroit News and WDIV-TV, found Stevens with 48 percent support compared with 41 percent for Abdul El-Sayed. The poll surveyed 500 likely Democratic voters between July 8 and July 11, following Mallory McMorrow's withdrawal from the race, and has a margin of error of approximately 4.5 percentage points.
Eaton County Fair Continues
The Eaton County Fair in Charlotte enters its third day Wednesday, with motocross taking center stage at the grandstand beginning at 7 p.m. Fair organizers expect another strong turnout as the annual event continues through the week.
