Prosecutor: Teen Killings Believed to Be Gang-Related

The Ingham County Prosecutor's Office says two fatal shootings involving teenagers last month are believed to be gang-related.

The first shooting occurred June 5 at Francis Park, where investigators say 18-year-old Javonathan Mitchell allegedly shot 19-year-old Lovaya Rodriguez. Rodriguez later died from her injuries on June 17.

A second shooting took place June 29 near St. Joseph Park, killing 15-year-old Deron James and injuring a 20-year-old woman. No charges have been announced in that case.

In response to the violence, Lansing officials increased police patrols in city parks beginning July 2.

Eaton County Murder Sentence Reduced

An Eaton County judge has re-sentenced Deshown Clark Jr., who was convicted in the 2021 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Darrell Smith on Lansing's southwest side.

Clark's original prison sentence of 40 to 80 years was reduced to 35 to 70 years, plus an additional two years for a weapons conviction. The resentencing followed an appeals court ruling that found his original attorney provided ineffective legal representation.

Cyclosporiasis Cases Continue to Climb

Michigan health officials report more than 7,600 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis statewide, an increase of nearly 500 cases since earlier in the week.

Ingham County has reported nearly 700 cases, while Eaton County has recorded 315 and Clinton County 205.

Governor Signs Rowan's Act

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed Rowan's Act into law following the 2024 death of six-year-old Rowan Morey during a failed custody exchange in Isabella County.

The legislation expands Michigan's child alert system to help notify the public in cases that previously did not qualify for an Amber Alert.

State Police Announce Major Drug Seizure

Michigan State Police arrested a 25-year-old semi-truck driver after discovering nearly 100 kilograms of marijuana and approximately $350,000 in cash during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Monroe County.

Authorities say the commercial truck, owned by a Tennessee-based company, was traveling from California to New Jersey when it was stopped.

President Trump to Visit Michigan

State Republican officials announced that President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Oakland County on Monday, where he is expected to appear at General Motors' Milford facility. The visit coincides with the start of early in-person voting in Michigan and the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge to vehicle traffic.

Michigan Honors Fallen Firefighter

Flags across Michigan were lowered to half-staff Thursday in honor of Sergeant Adam Amrozi of the Lincoln Park Fire Department, who died in the line of duty last weekend. Flags are scheduled to return to full staff Friday.
