US-127 Reopens After Crash-Related Closures

Traffic is flowing again on US-127 after multiple crashes during Monday's afternoon rush hour caused snapped power lines and forced the closure of both directions of the highway between Grand River Avenue and Lake Lansing Road.

Crews worked overnight to repair the damage, allowing the roadway to fully reopen around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the crashes.

Clinton County Man Faces 50 Wildlife and Firearm Charges

A 26-year-old Clinton County man is facing 50 wildlife and firearm violations following an investigation into alleged illegal deer hunting.

According to authorities, Thomas House is accused of shooting deer from a vehicle at night using a suppressed semi-automatic rifle in northern Clinton and southern Gratiot counties between April and November of last year. Investigators allege the animals were left where they were killed and that House recorded videos and photographs of the incidents on his cellphone.

Political Spending Proposal Advances

A citizen-led proposal aimed at limiting political spending in Michigan elections has cleared another hurdle.

The bipartisan Board of State Canvassers has certified petition signatures submitted by the advocacy group Money Out of Politics. The Michigan Legislature now has 40 days to approve the proposal or allow it to appear on the November ballot.

The measure seeks to prohibit political spending by corporations such as DTE Energy and Consumers Energy. Supporters argue the proposal would reduce corporate influence over state lawmakers and encourage action on utility rate increases, while opponents contend it would restrict the free speech rights of employees connected to those companies.
