More than a dozen people were arrested during Michigan State University’s Welcome Week, according to East Lansing police.
Most of the arrests occurred over the weekend in downtown East Lansing, police said. The arrests come one year after East Lansing officers faced criticism over several incidents during Welcome Week, including an encounter involving the pepper-spraying of two Black men.

Rollover Crash Closes Grand River Avenue
Lansing police are investigating a rollover crash that shut down Grand River Avenue on the city’s north side Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. between Sadie Court and Raymond Drive. Police had not immediately released additional information.
Another Sunday crash in Ingham County proved fatal.
Authorities said a 49-year-old woman was killed after her vehicle crashed into a home in the 5000 block of Barnes Road in Aurelius Township at approximately 3 a.m. No one inside the home was injured.
Aurelius Road Closing for Bridge Work
Lansing-area commuters are being reminded that Aurelius Road is scheduled to close Monday at the Pawlowski Creek culvert.
The closure is needed for bridge replacement work and is expected to remain in effect through late October. Detours will be available for drivers during the project.
Gas Prices Near $4.20 in Lansing Area
Gas prices continue to rise across Michigan.
According to AAA Michigan, the Lansing-area average was nearly $4.20 per gallon as of Sunday. That represents an increase of nearly 12 cents from a week earlier.
The statewide average was approximately $4.17 per gallon, up about two cents over the same period.
Michigan Democrats Finalize November Ticket
Michigan Democrats finalized their statewide ticket during their nominating convention over the weekend at the Lansing Center.
The party rallied supporters as Democrats look to maintain control of Michigan’s top executive offices.
State Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks was officially nominated as gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson’s running mate. The party also formally backed Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist for secretary of state and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit for attorney general.
A new statewide poll released over the weekend by Lansing-based Epic-MRA showed Benson leading Republican John James by four percentage points in the gubernatorial race.
In the U.S. Senate race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed held a four-point lead over Republican Mike Rogers. Both results were within the poll’s margin of error, according to the survey of 600 likely voters.
J.D. Vance Coming to Michigan
Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to visit Michigan Monday.
Vance is expected to headline a campaign event for Republican candidates at a technology facility in Sterling Heights.
Six Injured Following Ed Sheeran Concert
Six people were injured Saturday night in Detroit following an Ed Sheeran concert at Ford Field.
Stadium officials said the incident occurred in a vehicle tunnel, although additional details about what happened were not immediately disclosed.
Two people were initially listed in serious condition, while the other four were reported to be stable. Officials said all six were expected to recover.
