New details have been released following a deadly officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning on Lansing’s south side.

The Lansing Police Department says officers responded to the 600 block of Jolly Road after a 29-year-old man was reportedly banging on doors and windows. Police say the man was initially hit with a Taser, but later pointed a firearm at responding officers. Officers then shot the man, who died at the scene.

Lansing Police Chief Robert Backus said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon that a firearm was recovered at the scene. Seven Lansing police officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave while the criminal investigation continues. Michigan State Police are handling the investigation.

Former Lansing Mayor David Hollister Dies at 84

The Lansing community is mourning former Mayor David Hollister, whose family announced his death Wednesday at age 84 following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Hollister served as Lansing mayor from 1993 through 2001. Among his accomplishments, he was credited with efforts to keep General Motors operations in the capital city during his time in office.

Holt High School Student Struck by Vehicle

A student at Holt High School was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning before the start of the school day.

The student was taken to a doctor as a precaution, but school officials said there were no serious injuries. The district superintendent reminded drivers to use extra caution in school zones.

Mackinac Bridge Crash Injures Four

Four people were injured and another person was arrested following a two-vehicle crash that shut down the Mackinac Bridge for several hours Wednesday morning.

Michigan State Police say troopers responded after reports that multiple vehicles had traveled through the toll booths at a high rate of speed. A preliminary investigation indicated the vehicles had been driven recklessly before the crash.

Police identified the driver believed to be at fault as a 28-year-old man from Jamaica who had been living and working seasonally in the area. He is being held in the Mackinac County Jail. Authorities say alcohol is believed to have been a factor, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Michigan Senate Candidates Campaign Across State

The Michigan U.S. Senate race continued Wednesday as Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers campaigned at separate events.

El-Sayed spoke to college students at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Michigan Public reported that his event focused on issues including artificial intelligence, housing affordability and concerns about corporate influence in politics.

Rogers addressed an audience in Shelby Township, where he argued that Michigan needs a senator who can disagree with the president when necessary while still working with the administration.

The two candidates are competing for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat in the November election.

Former State Health Director Takes New Lansing Job

Former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel has taken a new position as a strategic adviser with the Winmatt Group.

Hertel is working with the lobbying firm through a partnership involving her consulting firm, EHSA, which was formed after she left the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
