Michigan Election Day Features U.S. Senate Race, Statewide Proposals and Local Contests

Categories: Local News

Election Day is underway across Michigan, with voters heading to the polls to decide several high-profile statewide, congressional and local races. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. for voters who have not already cast their ballots through absentee voting or early in-person voting.

The closely watched Michigan U.S. Senate race between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is drawing considerable attention, particularly following a last-minute endorsement Sunday by Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens in support of Rogers.

Rogers addressed the endorsement Monday, saying the focus should be on El-Sayed's positions rather than blaming Stevens.

“I think what people need to start focusing on is how extreme Abdul El-Sayed is,” Rogers said.

El-Sayed, who defeated Stevens in a contentious Democratic primary last August, dismissed additional questions about her endorsement Monday, saying he would rather discuss other topics, including restaurant recommendations, than distractions from the Senate race.

Michigan voters are also deciding races for governor, attorney general and secretary of state. Two statewide ballot proposals are also before voters, including measures addressing whether Michigan should hold a constitutional convention and whether to get money out of politics.

In the 7th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Tom Barrett is seeking to hold his seat against Democratic challenger William Lawrence.

Additional contests include races for the Michigan Legislature, State Board of Education and numerous judicial positions. Voters are deciding seats on the Michigan Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, circuit courts, probate courts and district courts.

Locally, voters are deciding board of trustee races at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College.

In Lansing, two issues on the ballot include renewal of the essential services millage and a proposed citizens advisory health care action board charter amendment. Other communities are considering millage renewals, ballot proposals and school board races.

In Mason, City Council seats are being decided amid a contentious campaign surrounding the community's data center controversy.

As of Monday afternoon, Michigan election officials reported that more than 2.3 million voters had already cast ballots, representing more than 31% of the state's active registered voters.

MSU Students Question Lack of Safety Alerts Following Halloween Night Shootings

Michigan State University students are raising questions about campus safety following two shootings in East Lansing on Halloween night that left five people injured.

The shootings occurred near MIC Avenue and Linden Street, as well as Stoddart and Frye Avenues. Both locations are just blocks from the MSU campus.

Students say they were unaware of either shooting until Sunday morning, prompting questions about why the university did not issue a campus safety alert following the incidents.

The shootings have renewed attention to campus communication and student safety as the university faces questions about how information involving nearby violence is shared with the campus community.

Meanwhile, Michigan State University has suspended four students from a fraternity while investigating an online video that apparently shows members using illegal drugs.

The students were representing Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the university is continuing to review the allegations and circumstances surrounding the video.

The investigation remains ongoing.
